The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has once again made headlines, closing 2024 with an awe-inspiring achievement. Dr. S. Somanath, Chairman of ISRO, proudly announced that the organization has successfully achieved the “right orbit” during the launch of SpaDeX, India’s ambitious space docking experiment.

Spectacular Night Launch at Sriharikota

At 10 PM on December 31, the skies over Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, came alive with the 62nd launch of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). This marked the culmination of a 25-hour countdown that began on Sunday. The PSLV rocket lifted off from the First Launch Pad, painting the night sky with streaks of orange as it carried twin docking satellites into orbit.

The Next Milestone: Space Docking Experiment

The final stage of the PSLV mission is now focused on lowering its orbit to deploy the POEM (PS4-Orbital Experiment Module), which will conduct crucial tests in the vacuum of space. The highlight of this mission, the space docking experiment, is scheduled for January 7, 2025.

In this groundbreaking operation, two satellites—Spacecraft A (SDX01), known as the ‘Chaser,’ and Spacecraft B (SDX02), dubbed the ‘Target’—will perform an intricate docking maneuver at an altitude of 470 km. Traveling at ten times the speed of a bullet, the satellites will align, connect, and later undock, showcasing India’s mastery of in-space docking technology.

Achieving this feat would place India among an elite group of nations, joining the United States, Russia, and China as pioneers in space docking technology.

Understanding Space Docking

Dr. Somanath explained the science behind docking in an exclusive interview: “Docking is the process where two space objects come together and connect for a specific purpose. This is achieved using soft mechanisms, hard mechanisms, or pressurized compartments for tasks like human transfer.”

For instance, docking enables crew modules to connect to the International Space Station, equalize pressure, and transfer astronauts safely.

A Year of Achievements for ISRO

This mission marks the 99th rocket launch from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota and a spectacular conclusion to ISRO’s eventful year. Beginning 2024 with a PSLV launch on January 1, ISRO has achieved remarkable milestones, including the placement of the SpaDeX satellites in their ideal orbits.
